Der Buddhismus wurde in Chinas nördlichen Dynastien, speziell in den Wei Dynastien (386-550 AD) Staatsreligion. Während dieser Periode pilgerte Fa Hsien im Jahr 411 v.Chr. nach Indien und kehrte mit heiligen buddhistischen Bildern und Texten zurück damit diese dann den chinesischen Handwerkern als Vorbilder dienen konnten um annehmbare Kunstwerke zu schaffen.
